If you are going to be a mother, which country do you think would be the best to be a mother in?
Well, according to the charity Save The Children, the best country is Norway.

The charity took into account factors such as maternal health, the availability of maternity leave,  educational levels and the general economic condition of the country, together with the overall health and nutrition of the babies.

A total of 165 countries were analysed.

The US is in position 31. In the US the maternal death rate is 15 times higher than in Greece and the infant mortality rate is four times greater than in Iceland.

The UK is at position 10, ahead of both France and Spain, which are at positions 14 and 16 respectively.

At the other end of the scale is Niger. This is the worst country in the world to have a baby. Here women receive, an average of 4 years of education. A woman is likely to lose a child at some time during her life. Life expectancy in Niger is just 56 years.

Previously, Afghanistan was the last in the list, but many improvements have been made, including increasing the school attendance rate, from a low 20% increasing to 97% percent over the period from the year 2000 to the present.

Childhood malnutrition is a vicious cycle, says Save The Children. Many women had suffered from nutritional deprivation when they were children and are now going on to produce underweight babies which have not been adequately nourished in the womb. This is made worse if the mother remains underfed. The charity wants countries to break this pattern by focusing their efforts on a child's first 1,000 days, which includes the baby's life in the womb.
